About the Book

She had her entire life planned until the Great War began and everything changed.

April 1914.  Barrie, Ontario.  Hettie Steward is feisty, educated, ambitious and stubborn.  Her fiancé, Geoffrey Bartlette, the love of her life since childhood, has been a patient man.  He waited while she attended nursing school and worked a year, but now it is time to wed.  While Hettie is thrilled to be starting her life with Geoffrey, she laments that marriage means sacrificing her beloved nursing career, and domestic life brings her nothing but drudgery and boredom.

When the Great War begins a few months into their marriage, Geoffrey enlists and persuades Hettie to join the Canadian Army Nursing Service and follow him overseas.  After all, everyone says the war will be short, and it will be their opportunity to have a proper honeymoon.  Returning to work is exactly what Hettie was craving, and she eager accepts.

The war, however, does not end quickly.  Soon tragedy strikes, proving true the old adage “be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.”  Geoffrey is killed at the Second Battle of Ypres, and Hettie is faced with a choice.  Return home or stay in Europe and continue nursing?  Moreover, will she discover the person she is meant to be now that her life has been steered onto a new path?

Angel of Mercy is the first in a trilogy following Hettie and her family as they navigate the challenges and heartbreak World War 1 brings.

Melina Druga’s Angel Of Mercy begins right before the First World War and we are introduced to our main character, Hettie. Hettie is a nurse who recently left the Royal Victoria Hospital to marry her childhood sweetheart, Geoffrey. The couple marries and Hettie retires from her job, but she feels like something is missing. She grows restless in the role of the housewife and longs to return to the hospital where she worked. Then Britain declares war on Germany and everything changes. Being true to England, Canada also enters this war and, after much thought, Geoffrey decides the right thing to do is enlist. Hattie didn’t expect this, but when he suggested that she should enlist to help as a nurse, she couldn’t refuse. She just couldn’t stand the housewife's life and missed helping people. The couple leaves for overseas with the idea that this will be a short war, but they are sadly mistaken. Hettie faces challenges and tragedies as she had never before. What the two thought would be a quick war that would be followed by their eventual honeymoon in Paris turns into years, changing the course of history and both of their lives. I thought Melina Druga did an awesome job with this story. I’m always coming across so many World War Two novels about soldiers or ladies waiting at home for their loves to return that it was nice to see one about the First World War. We always hear about the British, Germans, Russians and the Americans when it comes to this war. Canada always seemed to be put on the back-burner even though many men and women volunteered to fight and help Britain. We see a first-hand account of these men and women who put their lives on the line. Mostly we see it from Hettie’s point of view but that’s what makes it unique. When we read many war stories, we deal with the soldiers. In Angel Of Mercy, we step off the battlefield to the place that those injured men go to either be healed or to die. We see the horrors of war through the eyes of the young nurses who also thought that their stay would be short with a chance for adventure or to meet the loves of their lives. It’s a side of war that we often fail to see or look into. I think it’s definitely a book that history and romance fiction lovers will enjoy.
War is a harrowing time, and yet, some good can come out of it, including love. Our capacity for compassion and creation clashes with our ability to crash and kill. It is from this sweaty wrestle that love is born. In the angel of mercy we read about Hettie Steward who is a lively and determined young girl who seeks happiness in her marriage which forced her to sacrifice her passion for nursing. When the Great War started, it brought an unexpected opportunity for Hettie to return to her beloved profession. In war stories, we find war veterans who are scarred for the rest of their lives with their minds deranged by the horrors they have witnessed, but we also find the zest for life, with all its pain and beauty. Melina Druga’s book takes us on an unforgettable trip in which we view WW1 from the lenses of ordinary men and women who lived and loved during those harsh times. People who had the same desires and wants as we do. Melina creates a very fast moving plot which keeps us riveted throughout the book. I enjoyed the tight pace of Melina’s book, the conversations of the people in the book and the picturesque descriptions of those bygone times and places. This book gets a five star rating from zavesti.com team!
