Were you aware that grants are available for writers? Grants are funds given to businesses, government entities and nonprofit organizations for a specific purpose. Let’s examine where you can find grants for writers.
Arts Writers Grant Program
The grant supports new and emerging writers with a literary style and is awarded annually. Grants are awarded in four categories – articles, blogs, books and short-form writing – in amounts between $15,000 to $50,000.
Submission requirements include being a published author who is at least 25 years old. Applicants must also be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
The Kerouac Project
The project provides four writer-in-residence positions for three months at the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote Dharma Bums plus a food and utilities stipend. If you win the grant, you must live in the house for the three months.
Everyone is welcome to apply regardless of citizenship or formal education. Writers can apply in five categories – poetry, play, screenplay, fiction/short story, and nonfiction – and you can submit in more than one category.
National Endowment for the Arts
The National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in two categories – fiction and creative nonfiction prose and poetry on a two-year cycle.
The grants are awarded to published writers and are intended to allow the recipients to writing, research, travel, and advance their careers.
PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship
The $5,000 fellowship is awarded annually to author of children’s or young adult fiction. The goal is to “help writers whose work is of high literary caliber and assist a writer at a crucial moment in their career to complete a novel-in-progress.”
Sustainable Arts Foundation
The foundation provides annual grants to make residencies more accessible to writers and artists who are parents. Must be a tax-except organization to apply.
Funds for Writers lists multiple grant opportunities along with the deadlines and how to apply. Most of these are regional grants.
This is by no means a complete list. If you have others that you believe should be added, let me know.
